Martabans

Storage jars

Storage jars are a commodity par excellence. They were made and traded worldwide, such as these martabans from China, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The name ‘martaban’ refers to the port in present-day Myanmar from which these jars were traded extensively. Martabans were often passed down through generations. In Southeast Asia, martabans were also used to bury the dead.

Research on martabans

Dr. Eva Ströber (former curator Asian ceramics) also conducted research into the collection of pots from China and Southeast Asia (martabans) of the Princessehof in 2015/2016. Dr. Eva Ströber's martaban research was made possible in part by the Ottema-Kingma Stichting.
