Hyacinth container with landscape decoration, 1759 – 1770, factory of Johan Kerckhoff, Arnhem, earthenware, Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics (on loan from Ottema-Kingma Stichting).

Just as the 17th century had a tulip mania, the 18th century had a true hyacinth craze. After 1750, special hyacinth containers made of painted earthenware appeared. Elegant and graceful in shape, entirely in keeping with the taste of that time. The bulbs rested on a loose grid with large holes. Sticks were inserted into the holes next to it as support for the flower.
