Five-piece cabinset set with floral decoation, approx. 1760, Pottery Bakery De Porceleyne Byl, Delft, earthenware, Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics.

Wealthy citizens collected Chinese porcelain, but ‘Delfts porceleyn’ also became a luxury item. Delft therefore developed special cabinet sets for on top of the high cabinets, which were excellent for showing off. This is a typical five-piece Delft example. Because they stood on cabinets, the front was more lavishly decorated than the back.
