In China and Japan, potters had been using beautiful glazes as independent decoration for centuries. From the end of the 19th century, Western ceramists also fell under the spell of these eastern glazes. In the Netherlands, Chris Lanooy (1881 – 1948) and Bert Nienhuis (1873 – 1960) worked on these glazed ceramics in their own studios. To this day, there are ceramists who work in this tradition.
