Left: Vase with abstract decoration, 1916 – 1923, Pottery Factory Zuid-Holland, Gouda, design and execution Henri Breetvelt, earthenware, Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics.

Right: Vase with abstract decoration, approx. 1925, Pottery Factory Zuid-Holland, Gouda, design Leen Muller, earthenware, Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics.

Decorative earthenware with a silk-matt glaze: that was something entirely new! The Pottery Factory Zuid-Holland in Gouda had great success with it from 1910 onwards. The expressive decorations in bright, even colours that the painter Henri Breetvelt (1864 – 1923) executed at the factory between 1916 and 1923 are an artistic highlight in this genre.
