Albarello with decoration of fruits and vines, so called Nieuw-Delfts, approx. 1920, De Porceleyne Fles, Delft, design Leon Senf, earthenware, on loan from Royal Delft.
In 1910, pottery painter and designer Leon Senf (1860 – 1940) visited an exhibition of Islamic art in Munich. There, he made dozens of sketches, including one of a 13th or 14th century Syrian albarello. The model and decoration of this apothecary jar literally originate from there. The metallic luster glaze also originates from the Middle East. De Porceleyne Fles, where Senf worked, managed to perfect this difficult and expensive technique after years of experimenting.
